Embarking on a Solo Motorcycle Journey: A Life-Changing Adventure
On Tuesday, July 25th, 2023, I will embark on a solo motorcycle journey that will take me from Virginia to Fairbanks, Alaska. This 27-day trip will span a distance of over 4,000 miles across diverse terrains and climates, a thrilling adventure that I have been preparing for nearly a decade.
My journey begins with a 2018 Harley Davidson Electra Glide Ultra Limited, which will lead the way for the first leg of the trip. The final leg will be on a BMW adventure motorcycle, designed for harsh and challenging conditions.
Previous Exploration: The Four Corners Tour
My previous journey of this magnitude was a 39-day trip from San Diego, California to Key West, Florida, then to the border of Canada and the US in NE Maine, and further across the top of the country to Puget Sound. This journey, known as the 'Four Corners' tour, is a common undertaking for long-distance motorcycle riders.
Planning and Purpose
Why not start on Monday? Because I turn 65 on that day, and I want to spend it with my family. Tuesday, being a better day to start a long trip, allows me to avoid the weekend traffic snarl. Additionally, the adventure before my life-changing milestone is an important consideration.
Why This Ride?
'Because I can.' This simple and compelling statement encapsulates the essence of this upcoming solo motorcycle journey. It is an adventure driven by the desire to explore, challenge oneself, and embrace new experiences. No matter the age or circumstances, the spirit of adventure remains undiminished.
Preparation for the Afterlife
Death is also a significant aspect of this adventure. It is a time to prepare for a vacation from the physical world and to prepare for the next incarnation in a new body. Chief Seattle’s words, 'Death there is no death just a changing of worlds,' offer a profound perspective on the nature of life and death.
Adventures Shifting from Physical to Mental
As we age, adventures often shift from the physical to the mental. Embracing these mental challenges can be just as invigorating. For instance, instead of exploring abandoned mines in the Mojave Desert, I have set a goal to visit every wine tasting room in California, a total of approximately 1,100 venues.
Today's Adventure: The Start of a New Chapter
Today, I am beginning another significant adventure—one that aligns with a long-held dream. My journey begins today, as I step into service to become a teacher. I will graduate in December, and this is my last semester of college. For two weeks, I will focus on preparing for the responsibilities ahead, from classroom management to shaping young minds.
From Dreams to Reality
This dream was born when I was just 14 years old in Africa. Today, I cannot believe this dream is becoming a reality. The excitement and the terror of this impending responsibility are a testament to the gravity and joy that come with teaching the next generation and influencing their worldviews.
Today marks the start of a new chapter in my life, both as a solo rider and as a teacher. This adventure extends beyond the miles on the highway or the knowledge imparted in the classroom. It is a journey of self-discovery, resilience, and dedication to building a better future.
