Traveling by road offers a unique and personal experience that is not only fun but also educational. From the bustling cities to the quiet countryside, road trips provide a wide range of adventures that can be tailored to suit each individual's interests.
North American Road Trip: 2017 Upstate New York to Nova Scotia
In 2017, I had the incredible experience of driving from Upstate New York to Halifax, Nova Scotia, passing through Quebec and New Brunswick. This journey not only allowed me to enjoy the beauty of the Canadian landscapes but also to embark on an adventure all alone, which I found both liberating and rewarding. I spent several days driving through Quebec, putting my French skills to the test. As I reached the Atlantic Ocean in Halifax, the emotions were overwhelming, and I found myself tears of joy, proud of my accomplishment.
I had the opportunity to explore Montreal, a city rich in culture and history, where I got to experience a taste of French Canadian life. My trusty Toyota Camry was put to the test, and the journey was filled with breathtaking moments. This experience is something I would love to relive, and it was a turning point in my life, instilling a love for solo travel and road trips.
Southwest United States to Arizona
My wife and I moved from New York to Arizona, and although this move was more about a new beginning, the road trip across the country was a memorable experience. I wish I had taken my time to explore more of the places we passed through, as each has its own unique charm and story. It’s a testament to the vast and diverse landscapes of the United States.
South African Motorbike Journey: 1986
The most memorable road trip I ever took was a motorbike adventure through South Africa in 1986. Planned months in advance, this was a 10-day trip covering the Garden Route to Cape Town, then up the western side and making a right turn to Augrabies. Ray, Roelf Jan, and I plotted our route, setting out early in the morning, and the trip was a holiday of a lifetime.
Our journey took us through Johannesburg, by Heidelberg, and into the Orange Free State. We passed through Bethlehem, which is named after the biblical one because it is a wheat-growing area. The first sunrise on the sandstone mountains was breathtaking, and we arrived in Ficksburg right in time for the Wimpy restaurant opening.
Next, we traveled through Lesotho, where Basotho men were seen riding their ponies with traditional blankets and conical hats. We passed by Clocolan, Ladybrand, and Wepener. Aliwal North, famous for its hot springs, was a pit stop for us. Despite my discomfort, I enjoyed the luxury of changing scenery. We arrived in Queenstown, where my condition allowed a rare enjoyable dinner.
The next morning, the mood and health improved, and we set off for Queenstown, eventually reaching Cape Town and then heading north to Augrabies. Our journey covered more than 20000 kilometers in just ten days.
This expedition was not just a physical feat but an emotional journey, filled with beautiful moments and challenges. The road trip through South Africa remains etched in my memory, and I cherish the camaraderie and adventure with my companions.
