Driving from Delhi to Mumbai: A Memorable Journey with a Brand New Car
Imagine buying a brand new car and embarking on a thrilling road trip from Delhi to Mumbai. This journey from the northern tip of India to the western coast can be both adventurous and memorable, especially if you are familiar with your car and the route perfectly. In 2007, I had an opportunity to undertake such a trip with a new Renault Logan. Here’s a detailed account of that memorable journey.
Preparation and Briefing
Back then, the concept of Google Maps was less prevalent, but we managed to cover the distance of over 1,850 kilometers in 53 hours. Before setting off, a few preparations were in order. The Renault Logan, brand new from the showroom, displayed only 212 kilometers on its odometer. It was equipped with all the necessary safety and comfort features modern cars offer, ensuring a smooth journey.
The company had planned to send the car to Pune via a transporter. However, I seized the opportunity to drive down instead of relying on the transporter. To prepare, I got the car checked by the showroom staff and received some initial briefing on the controls. They advised me not to increase the engine speed beyond 2000 RPM until the car had covered 1000 kilometers, as the first servicing would be at that mark.
The Journey
We embarked on the journey with three companions, using a mix of pre-calculation and real-time navigation. Our route took us through some historic and scenic landmarks, including Chandigarh, Delhi, Agra, Gwalior, Guna, Indore, and Aurangabad, before reaching our destination in Pune. The total distance covered was around 1,850 kilometers, which is equivalent to the distance between Delhi and Mumbai, making us retrace the journey between the two major cities.
Key Points During the Trip
Engine Speed
As advised, we kept the engine speed under 2000 RPM to ensure the car's longevity and fulfill the initial 1000 kilometers of driving. This precaution helped us build trust in the car and its mechanical performance. By the time we reached the crucial mark, the car seemed to be in good shape and was ready for its first servicing.
Navigation
The absence of Google Maps meant that we relied more on traditional maps, landmarks, and local knowledge. However, with careful planning and a well-experienced team, we managed to navigate through various terrains and traffic conditions smoothly. Modern technology can certainly enhance the experience, but the adventure of a long-distance drive without it adds an extra layer of excitement and adrenaline.
A Memorable Experience
The journey from Chandigarh to Pune was more than just reaching the destination. It was a learning experience about the car, the road, and the scenic beauty along the way. We covered 1,850 kilometers in 53 hours, which averages to a little over 34 kilometers per hour, a comfortable speed for a long journey.
That trip with the Renault Logan is still remembered as a milestone in my driving experience. The car performed exceptionally well, and we had no major issues, ensuring a stress-free and enjoyable trip.
Conclusion
Driving from Delhi to Mumbai, especially with a brand new car, can be a rewarding and educational experience. It’s a testament to the reliability of modern cars and the planning and preparation that goes into a long-distance journey. The experience from 2007 remains a highlight of my early driving days and continues to inspire me to plan similar adventures.
