Exploring America: My 17 Visits to the USA

Having stepped foot in the United States 17 times, I've had the chance to experience a country that is as diverse as it is vast. From short, week-long business trips to extended stays of up to 9 weeks, my interactions with the USA have been numerous. But why does the question 'Have you been to the US before?' matter?

Understanding the Purpose

The purpose behind asking about past visits to the USA is to understand your ties to the country and your reasons for travel. It's not about achieving a particular state of 'nirvana,' but rather ensuring that the intent is clear for both visa and immigration. Consular officers and border control officials are trained to recognize potential immigrants and problematic cases.

Experiences in the USA

The USA stands out in many ways. The sheer size of the country is undeniably impressive. Whether it's the vast stretches of road, sprawling houses, or expansive malls, everything is on a grand scale. It's difficult to see people and crowds except in bustling shopping centers. Car culture is deeply ingrained, with drive-thru restaurants, pharmacies, and even supermarkets becoming a part of daily life. Drive-in cinemas, once a common sight, have dwindled with the advent of modern movie styles.

Travelling to the USA

One of the most significant challenges of visiting the USA is the lengthy journey time and cramped economy class seating. A typical trip includes flying from one place to another, often involving long layovers and days of travel. For instance, a 22-hour flight to and from India can be a grueling experience. The journey can span multiple days, with layovers in places like Singapore or Bangkok.

Sample Journey

Day 1: Indianapolis to LA - 4.5 hours Day 1/2: LA to Bangkok - 19 hours, overnight stay at LA - 14 hours Day 2: LA to Bangkok - 19 hours, flight to New Delhi - 4.5 hours, overnight stay in New Delhi - 14 hours Day 3: Pune - 2 hours (arrived at very fresh and well-rested)

Additionally, long layovers can be a boon, as evidenced by my overnight stay in Singapore during a flight to Mumbai.

Living Costs and Accommodation

Living costs in the USA vary widely, depending on location. A 2-bedroom apartment in Los Angeles or San Francisco can cost around $2500 to $3000 per month, whereas a similar apartment in Des Moines, Iowa, might cost around $1000 to $1100 per month. In 2003, a 2-bedroom apartment in Columbus, IN, cost me around $650 per month.

A Photo Diary

Apart from the challenges, the USA offers a wealth of experiences. My visits have included exploring iconic landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, visiting major companies like Electronic Arts, and experiencing the glamour of Las Vegas. Here are some cherished moments:

Visit to the Golden Gate Bridge (2007) Business visit to Electronic Arts (2007) Napa Valley wine country (2007) Universal Studios LA (2007) Circus-Circus in Las Vegas (2007) The famous Bellagio fountains The Cosmopolitan with its grandeur The Flamingo and Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas

Each visit offers a unique glimpse into the multifaceted nature of American life and culture.

A Historical Note on Las Vegas

The growth of Las Vegas can be traced back to Benjamin ‘Bugsy’ Seigel. He saw an opportunity in the city and was instrumental in its development, transforming the Flamingo into a landmark. Despite his eventual demise, Las Vegas's fame and growth are attributed to his efforts. His story, along with that of the Flamingo, adds a layer of intrigue to the history of the city.
