Exploring Hidden Gems in West Bengal for Family Vacations

Introduction

Choosing the perfect vacation spot with the family can be a daunting task, especially with so many beautiful destinations to choose from. In this article, I will take you on a journey to some of the lesser-known but equally enchanting places in West Bengal, one of the most underrated regions in India. From the serene beauty of Sillery Gaon to the majestic views of Kanchenjunga, West Bengal has a lot to offer for a family getaway.

Exploring Sillery Gaon

Located in the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas, Sillery Gaon is a hidden gem that deserves a spot on your family vacation list. The town is known for its lush greenery, scenic views, and hospitable locals. Our trip began in December, which was perhaps the best time to visit, as the mesmerizing Christmas decorations added a unique charm to the place.

Our journey from Guwahati to Sillery Gaon took us on a roller-coaster of emotions and views. The steep roads and elephant crossings provided thrilling experiences, and motion sickness was a minor discomfort that we managed with some restful stops. Beyond the natural beauty, the visit to Delo Nature Park and the surrounding areas added value to our trip. While we couldn't afford paragliding, the tranquility of nature walks and the breathtaking views made the experience unforgettable.

Delo Nature Park and Beyond

Delo is a well-maintained nature park about 6 kilometers from Kalimpong. The park offers magnificent views of the surrounding areas and even the majestic Mt. Kanchenjunga (though, unfortunately, we couldn't see it due to the weather). The highlight of our visit was a little hike to a viewpoint where we enjoyed a bonfire and some beers under the starlit sky. The cold night air didn't dampen our spirits, and the cozy accommodations ensured a comfortable stay even in the cold.

Lunch and Biblical Clues

The lunch at Reshi, where we had a hearty bowl of Wai-Wai with scrambled eggs, reminded us of the Bible for some reason. The homestays in Sillery Gaon were simple but homey, and we were pleased to find a more peaceful and less touristy environment compared to the bustling homestays in other parts of the town.

Closing Reflect!

Our journey from Guwahati to Sillery Gaon returned us to our routine by the end of the first day. The next morning, we bid farewell to Sillery Gaon, and our trip came to an end. We ended up at Kalimpong, where we indulged in some Christmas pastries and took a train back to Guwahati. The experience provided us with a fresh perspective on the diversity and beauty of West Bengal.

Key Points for Consideration

Transportation: We started from Guwahati to New Jalpaiguri by train and then hired a car for the journey to Sillery Gaon. Make sure to book your car or bus in advance and carry your own water if the homestays do not provide it. Accommodation: Homestays in Sillery Gaon are reasonably priced, ranging from Rs. 700 to 800 per person, depending on your negotiation and the overall comfort of the homestay. Weather: December is a beautiful time to visit West Bengal, as the weather is cooler and the parks are filled with Christmas decorations. Activities: While the homestays and natural beauty are the main attractions, budget activities like paragliding can be enjoyed for a change.

West Bengal is full of surprises, and Sillery Gaon is just one of the many places that can offer a wholesome family vacation. Feel free to explore the region and make memories that will last a lifetime.
