Exploring India's Enchanting Hinterlands: From Alappuzha's Backwaters to Keral's Lagoons

Travelling has always been a great part of my life. The thrill of exploring different places one has read about or dreamed of is an experience that never fails to amaze. For me, the opportunity to explore Kerala during a work transfer has transformed into a rewarding adventure filled with natural beauty and serene landscapes.

Recently, I had the chance to explore the backwaters of Alappuzha, Kerala, and it was an extraordinary experience. Alappuzha, a town known for its canal backwaters, beaches, and lagoons, was described by Lord George Curzon, Viceroy of India, in the early 20th century as the “Gateway to God’s Own Country.”

Houseboat Excursion in Alappuzha

As a part of my journey, I booked a day’s houseboat service from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM with Minar de’ lake, which was positively reviewed on Google. Although all houseboats look similar, we opted for a 4-bed room houseboat since we were traveling in a group of 10.

After getting an idea of the place through social media, my expectations for the houseboat trip were quite high. However, living in this setting turned out to be much better than I had anticipated. The views of the Vembanad Lake are breathtaking, and it feels like a hamlet on water. The rooms are well-equipped with amenities, and the traditional Kerala cuisine, especially the delicious vegetarian dishes, made the experience even more memorable.

A Commendable Stay at Minar de’ lake

The staff at Minar de’ lake made a significant effort to ensure that our stay was nothing short of fantastic. The boat was parked at a small inhabited island, providing a unique opportunity to explore the ways of living of the local community.

Through social media and word of mouth, I had some preconceived notions about the place. However, living in the houseboat for a day changed my perception in a profound way. The lake is full of boats, and it feels like a hamlet on water. The experience was truly exceptional, and it solidified my resolve to explore more of Kerala during my stay.
