Upcoming Train 19: A Successor to Train 18 in Indian Railways

Indian Railways is rapidly advancing its transport infrastructure with the introduction of the new Train 19. This upcoming train marks a significant evolution from its predecessor, the renowned Train 18, setting the stage for enhanced travel experiences.

Train 19: Key Features and Improvements

1. Sleeper-Class Model of Train 18: Train 19 will be the sleeper-class counterpart to Train 18, offering a comfortable and modern experience for long-distance travelers.

2. Replacement of Tejas Express: The Indian Railways plans to discontinue the production of the Tejas Express, the first semi-high speed, fully air-conditioned train in India. This move aims to replace its technology with faster alternatives like Train 19.

Currently, there are two Tejas Express trains in operation. The first, inaugurated in 2017, runs between Mumbai and Goa. The second, launched in March 2019 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, runs between Chennai Egmore and Madurai stations.

Advanced Technology and Facilities

3. Advanced Facilities: Train 19 will feature state-of-the-art facilities currently available in the Vande Bharat Express, ensuring passengers enjoy a premium travel experience.

4. Rectified Version of Train 18: This new train will address some of the minor glitches observed during the operation of Train 18, thus providing a more seamless and efficient journey.

5. Long-Distance EMU with DPRS Technology: Train 19 will be designed as a long-distance Electro-Multiple Unit (EMU) with Distributed Power Rolling Stock (DPRS) technology. It will have sleeper coaches instead of only chair cars, unlike Train 18.

Production and Export Potential

6. Vande Bharat Express Train Sets: The Integral Coach Factory, Chennai (ICF Chennai), will manufacture 40 Vande Bharat Express train sets. These will be fitted with a new driver cabin crash guard, designed with an aluminum frame in lieu of the previous fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP).

7. Global Interest: Notably, ICF Chennai will be manufacturing sleeper class coaches for the Vande Bharat Express for the Indian Railways. This initiative shows considerable interest from South American and Southeast Asian nations, hinting at export opportunities.

The Successor Project: Train 20

It's important to note that the successor to Train 18 is actually Train 20, named after its year of launch, 2020. Train 20 is envisioned as a replacement for long-distance intercity sleeper train services like Rajdhani Express. It will feature a lighter aluminum body and is expected to have a slightly faster top speed of 176 km/h.

8. International Collaboration: The Indian government, like with Train 18, expects bids from multinational firms such as Alstom, Bombardier, Stadler, or Talgo. However, the project will still adhere to the Make in India initiative. Train 20 is also planned to include additional features such as Wi-Fi.

9. Manufacturing Continuity: The production of Train 20 will also be carried out at the Integral Coach Factory, Chennai, aligning with the existing manufacturing capabilities for Train 19.
