Retirement Hotspots in the Southwestern United States: Best Locations and Considerations

Choosing the perfect location to retire can be a daunting task, given the multitude of factors to consider. From cost of living to climate and accessibility to healthcare and leisure activities, each region presents its own unique set of pros and cons. This article takes a closer look at several popular retirement destinations in the southwestern United States, with a focus on New Jersey and specific locations within states like California, Colorado, and New Mexico. We'll explore retirement in the southwest, pointing out the best options and what to expect in each place.

New Jersey

New Jersey can be an excellent retirement destination, especially for those with ample financial resources. Despite its higher cost of living, it offers a diverse range of retirement options. Beaches, mountains, lakes, and the vibrant city of New York can be reached conveniently, particularly if you choose to retire in the suburbs. There are numerous retirement communities, assisted living facilities, and medical facilities accessible across the state.

New Retirement in Southern California

For a more relaxed and serene environment, moving to Southern California might be the way to go. After living in Seattle, the Rancho Mirage, California experience offers a complete change with its gated country club community. The nearby Eisenhower Medical Center and our physician provide excellent access to healthcare. Our spacious 4-bedroom, 4-bathroom home is perfect for hosting guests, along with the amenities of the gated community including security, swimming pools, fitness centers, social activities, and restaurants. Friendships and social connections are strong due to nearby longtime neighbors and visitors from far away, making the area truly welcoming. There are also many entertainment venues, theaters, shopping, and restaurants in the Palm Springs resort area.

Pricey Western U.S. Real Estate

While the western U.S. can be expensive, certain locations offer better value. Colorado Springs has a booming economy and is rated No. 3 in the nation. However, it's important to consider other factors, such as Albuquerque, a beautiful city with somewhat milder weather, although the crime rate and poverty levels may be higher. Cities like Tucson face rising housing prices and low incomes, with extreme summer temperatures. Sierra Vista, Arizona could be a more affordable option, being about 15 degrees cooler than Tucson and offering more affordable housing. Additionally, many Texas towns remain affordable, particularly smaller communities which often provide a welcoming atmosphere for retirees.

New Mexico: A Liberal Choice

I strongly recommend New Mexico. It is known for its more liberal atmosphere and a milder climate compared to Utah, and it stays cooler than Texas or Arizona. New Mexico is also cheaper than California, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, or Nevada. The state offers a range of retirement opportunities, from rural living in small towns to vibrant urban centers.

Southern Utah: St George

For a quieter and more scenic retirement, St George, Utah is a top choice. It boasts mild winters and incredible natural scenery, making it a great environment for retirees. Summers can be hot, but there is little or no snow. The area's climate doesn't get extremely cold during winter. It has its own airport and is a short drive from Las Vegas, providing easy access to modern amenities. Chain stores are available, and it's just a click away with online shopping options. Additionally, three national parks are under two hours away, ensuring ample outdoor leisure activities.

Retiring in the southwestern United States comes with a unique blend of scenery, affordable living, and access to healthcare. Whether in New Jersey, Southern California, Colorado Springs, Albuquerque, or St George, there's a perfect location for every retiree's preferences and needs.
