Protection and Comfort in Solitude: Your Ultimate Wilderness Destination
For many, the allure of solitude in the wilderness is irresistible. Whether you choose Alaska or Ocala National Park, the wilderness offers a chance to break free from the noise of the world. But how do you prepare for a month of isolation and what does that entail?
Preparing Your Wilderness Retreat
If I were to spend a month alone in the wilderness, my choice would be Ocala National Park. I would need to bring an RV loaded with all the necessities: satellite TV, a Jacuzzi, and even bear spray. The RV would be a comfy living space, ensuring that I maintain a high standard of living in the great outdoors. However, before financing such an extravagant setup, I would rent it first to ensure it meets my expectations.
Camping in the Woods
Camping in the woods with an RV sounds luxurious, but it’s crucial to plan effectively. The RV should be equipped with the right gear for survival, such as a satellite TV for entertainment and a Jacuzzi for relaxation. However, bear spray is key to safety. While it’s true that underarm sprays may not be as effective, bear spray remains the primary defense against potential threats in the wilderness. Carrying necessities like bear spray is paramount to ensure safety during an extended camping trip.
Fuel and Feeding
Provisions also need careful planning. My food supply would arrive via helicopter, ensuring that I have tasty gourmet dishes delivered directly to my campsite. While I don’t particularly crave fancy restaurants, I do want to avoid hunger. Pinecones will be for my dogs to play with, ensuring they are entertained while I focus on survival.
Autumn Splendor in Alaska
Alternatively, if the wilderness beckons you towards Alaska or the upper regions of Washington, the season plays a significant role. In these areas, the fall season offers vibrant autumn foliage and cooler temperatures, creating a breathtaking atmosphere. While the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail) may provide a fascinating hiking experience, the solitude might not be as secluded as one would hope.
Isolation and Activity
For those who desire true isolation, consider a solo canoe journey down the Coppermine River from Lac de Gras to the Arctic Ocean. A 675 km (420 miles) journey offers the chance to escape from civilization, away from the dangers of cannibalism mentioned in the story of the Brits two centuries ago. The experience can be both challenging and rewarding, providing a sense of true solitude.
Bright Islands: Hawaii
Hawaii stands out as a unique and appealing destination. Its beautiful islands offer abundant water, food, and shelter, along with great weather and an abundance of activities. Maui, with its size, provides a perfect balance of solitude and entertainment, making it an ideal choice for a month-long expedition.
Adventure Awaits in Dominica
The island of Dominica in the Caribbean also offers a different kind of wilderness experience. Known as the "Fruit Garden of the Caribbean," Dominica is a paradise for those who enjoy the natural bounty. During a visit with your spouse, you might find yourself picking fruits from the foliage, enjoying iguanas, and savoring the sea creatures. Our recent trip involved walking through the lush valleys, where we encountered amazing waterfalls and natural hot tubs. The vistas are stunning, and the natural wonders are endless.
Final Thoughts: The choice of your wilderness destination depends on your personal preferences and circumstances. Be it Ocala, Alaska, Hawaii, or Dominica, the wilderness offers a unique and unforgettable experience. Whether you choose to live in luxury or seek true solitude, remember to always prioritize safety and preparation.
