The Journey of an Artist: Where Does Your Art Hang?
An artist's piece of work is often seen in various public places, from cozy restaurants to prestigious art galleries. For me, my art has found its home in unexpected places, such as the walls of a restaurant in Minnesota, where I created humorous cartoon illustrations for menu items. It was a commission job full of creativity and wit. One illustration featured Criminal Onions devising a plan for onion rings, with the clever caption, 'Now dis is da plan.' It was a fun project, and I can still recall the excitement of having my art displayed alongside the renowned works of Monet and Picasso in the Art Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Sadly, both sets of artworks were stolen, but the experience was memorable, especially as it was the only artwork stolen from that distinguished venue.
Over the years, my art has also been featured in magazines, newspapers, and books. These works are original creations that I retain the rights to, although some clients may need scans or the originals to be returned. Typically, the pay rate for such artistic endeavors is around $350 on average. Recently, I have experienced a surge in commissions, following a period of slower work since January. This resurgence is welcome, especially considering the impact of the global pandemic on the arts industry.
Beyond these commissioned works, I participate in juried competitions and temporary exhibitions at galleries. In the past, my art has been shown in numerous places around the world. However, my recent illness has limited my ability to participate in as many shows as before. Yet, I continue to collaborate with my son, making gallery openings a vital part of our artistic journey.
For any artist, a gallery opening is a significant milestone. It allows for the public to interact with your work and provides a platform to showcase your creations to a broader audience. I remember the thrill of seeing people admire and appreciate my art in these settings. It's not just about the art itself; it's also about the community and connection that arise from sharing your work.
Whether it's through commissioned pieces, juried competitions, or gallery openings, the journey of an artist is a unique one. Each experience, from the excitement of finding a home for your art to the challenges of balancing creative work with personal health, contributes to the rich tapestry of an artist's life. If you're an artist, there are many places your art could hang, and each one holds a special significance and a memory.
