The United States as a Holiday Destination: A Personal Journey Through NYC

Since my mother and I embarked on our first trip to the United States in December 2002, I have had the privilege of experiencing various corners of this vast and diverse nation. Overall, the United States has been a delightful holiday destination, with most places I've visited offering unique and enjoyable experiences.

First Impressions and the Visit to NYC (2019)

For the first time in my life, I undertook a 7-day city trip to New York City in 2019. Despite its status as a flagship city alongside Los Angeles, there's no arguing that NYC is a treasure trove of attractions, making the visit particularly memorable.

The American Museum of Natural History is world-class, and the Metropolitan Museum is a great center for art. The UN building left a strong impression with its symbolism and architecture. However, my visit to Riker's Island was disappointing, as I was unable to tour due to protocols. The Edgar Allan Poe cottage would have benefited from better maintenance and a remounting in Central Park. The Intrepid vessel, on the other hand, provided a fascinating historical insight into naval warfare. The Statue of Liberty and other skyscrapers were not as interesting to me as the more hidden gems the city has to offer.

Overall Experience and Reflections

While I organized the trip myself, the hostel experience was subpar. Consequently, I did not have as many genuine interactions or "dates" as I would have liked. However, the city's vibrant nightlife offered some surprises, such as the diverse crowd at the bar on the final day, a scene that was not available in my home country due to different cultural norms.

New York City is a city where one can find restaurants from every corner of the globe, making the culinary experiences exceptional. The warmth of shopkeepers, although a reflection of their past experiences, was a charming contrast. The city's challenge lies in maintaining its spirit and ensuring that all visitors feel welcomed. It is a place that needs constant maintenance and a focus on providing a positive experience to everyone who wanders through its streets.

The Pros and Cons of NYC

Despite its historical significance, New York City is not without its issues. Though I did not witness rats, the city's reputation as a place that isn't as top-tier anymore but still holds value remains. The city faces ongoing challenges in maintaining its spirit and ensuring all residents and visitors remain connected with the city’s culture and history.

Will I return to New York City? Perhaps, but I have my doubts. If invited and offered some value-added services, I might consider visiting again. However, it seems that other cities might be more inviting, perhaps those that attract the "wizzkids from Goldman Sachs" who bring their skills and energy to new heights.

Conclusion

While the United States offers a vast array of holiday destinations, each with its unique charm and attractions, New York City, though a gem, faces ongoing challenges in maintaining its appeal. A balanced approach to addressing these challenges, combined with continuous development and innovation, will be key to its ongoing success as a world-class travel destination.
