Transferring F-1 Visa and I-20 Records: Everything You Need to Know

When changing schools during your studies in the United States, understanding the process of transferring your F-1 visa and I-20 records is crucial. This guide will provide a comprehensive overview of the steps involved, common methods, and important considerations.

Legal Methods for Transfer

There are two primary legal ways to manage your F-1 visa and I-20 records when transferring to a new school:

Ask your current school to hold your admission for a semester, then apply for a transfer to your desired school along with the relevant credits. Travel to your desired school upon which you must provide an address to the BCP. If the provided address is in a different city, you should have a compelling explanation, such as a sibling residing there.

SEVIS Transfer Process

If you plan to transfer to a new school, you must request your current school to transfer your SEVIS (System for Enrollments and Student and Visitor Information) record to your new school before beginning full-time studies there. This process is formally known as a SEVIS transfer. It is distinct from an academic transfer, which is about changing academic programs or departments.

Re-applying for an F-1 Visa

Even if your existing F-1 visa is still valid, in most cases, you must reapply for a new F-1 visa using the new I-20 issued by your new school. This new I-20 will have a different SEVIS number.

Traveling with Current I-20

During the period between your current school and the new one, you can still use your existing F-1 visa with the I-20 issued by your current school. You can travel to the United States and join your desired school without needing a new visa if your SEVIS record has been properly transferred.

Proper SEVIS Transfer Before Entry

The SEVIS record can be transferred to your new school either before or after your arrival in the United States. Some people opt to fly to their initial destination and get the SEVIS record transferred to the new school first, to avoid potential questions from immigration officials at the port of entry.

Important Considerations

It is essential that you complete the SEVIS transfer within the 60-day grace period after graduation from the old school. Additionally, the gap between your graduation and the start date of courses at the new school should be less than five months for a successful SEVIS transfer.

Re-applying for F-1 Visa

If you are unable to complete the SEVIS transfer and your new school creates a new SEVIS record, you will need a new F-1 visa to enter the United States.

Note: Always consult with your international student advisor or the designated school compliance officer for detailed guidance tailored to your specific situation.
