Travelling by Train During the Pandemic: A Safe and Comfortable Experience?
As the world gradually opens up, more individuals are looking to travel. However, the experience of traveling on public transportation, such as trains, comes with its own set of risks, particularly concerning the transmission of infectious diseases like COVID-19. In this article, we will explore the safety measures in place and share personal experiences to help you decide if train travel is the right choice for your next trip.
Understanding the Risks of Train Travel During the Pandemic
Traveling by train, like any other form of public transportation, exposes you to a higher risk of catching infectious diseases such as COVID-19. The close proximity to other passengers means that infectious agents like droplets can spread more easily. To mitigate this risk, it is important to follow certain precautions:
Get Tested: Before traveling, ensure that you are not infectious. Many countries offer free or low-cost testing options. Check Local Rates: Monitor the case rates in your area. If they are high, consider the importance of your trip and whether it can be postponed. Use a Mask: Wear a high-quality mask when traveling. Ensure it fits properly and covers both your nose and mouth. Many people have reported catching the virus on airline flights, so train travel carries a similar risk, although the specific measures in place on trains can vary significantly.
Personal Experiences and Train Travel
I have had the opportunity to travel extensively by train, often opting for premium options such as Brit Rail, Swiss Rail, and Euro Rail. Despite sharing these trains with many passengers, the service I experienced was consistently outstanding. The station environments were well-organized, and the onboard care and attention were far superior to what one typically finds on an airplane.
The trains’ schedules were often efficient, with connecting trains often on the same platform, reducing wait times. The First Class options offered luxury with more room and snack and beverage service right at your seat. In Europe, trains are often the fastest and most convenient way to travel, connecting city centers seamlessly.
Railway Safety Measures and Personal Experience
Railways around the world are making significant efforts to upgrade their systems to ensure the safety of their passengers. Delayed trains are a common occurrence, but these are often due to factors beyond the railway's control. Safety breaches, however, are negligible.
Personal Journey During the Pandemic
I had not traveled since the beginning of the pandemic. My journey from Chennai to Kochin on April 12, 2021, was an unavoidable one. I made sure to take all necessary precautions, including wearing a mask, carrying sanitizer, and maintaining physical distance wherever possible.
The station was a bit crowded, but the couch train (ac 2 tier) was not. Everyone aboard was wearing masks and maintaining a safe distance. Despite my precautions, I reached my destination without any significant issues. However, four days after arriving, I started showing symptoms and tested positive for COVID-19. Thankfully, it was a mild infection, and I am now in recovery.
This experience taught me that even seemingly safe journeys can carry risks. Perhaps opting for a sleeper compartment with better ventilation might have been a wiser choice.
Conclusion
Travel by train during the pandemic does pose risks, but these can be managed with proper precautions. Railway systems are continually improving their safety measures, and the experience on board can be both safe and comfortable. However, it is crucial to stay informed about the local case rates and to proceed with caution.
