Unconventional Art in Our Home: A Showcase of Unique and Intriguing Pieces

When it comes to home decor, not everyone follows the traditional path. Some of us embrace artistic pieces that challenge the norm, adding an element of intrigue and personality to our living spaces. In this article, we will explore some of the nontraditional art pieces that have found their way into our home.

Nontraditional Art and Its Significance

Before we delve into the specific pieces we've displayed, it's important to understand the concept of nontraditional art. Traditional art is generally defined by established genres, techniques, and styles, while nontraditional art steps outside these boundaries to explore new forms, materials, and ideas. Non-traditional artworks often bring a unique perspective to home decor and personal expression.

Paper Hat Creation: An Unique Touch of Art

Sometimes, art can be as simple as a paper hat. One piece that stands out in my home is a large paper hat I crafted from postcards and tissue paper. This hat is part of a yearly tradition where I make hundreds of these hats and give them away at a parade. I am indeed a found material artist, and my work often incorporates recycled and unconventional materials.

Ironwood Grave Guard: A Cultural Gift

Another non-traditional art piece in our home is an old ironwood "grave guard" from Borneo that my husband gave me for Mother's Day. This is just one of the many unique and culturally significant artworks we've incorporated into our living space. My wife is not your typical chocolate or greeting card mom; she appreciates the rich history and storytelling behind each piece.

My Crafting Journey at Renaissance Faires

A tribute to my crafting history can be seen in the many unique pieces we've collected over the years. I've worked in Renaissance Faires since the early Eighties, and my collection includes a plethora of handmade and intricate items. In this single room, for instance:

A mid-1800s ladies bonnet made by hand from woven wheat, adorned with feathers from a real Victorian bonnet. A small wall hanging created with pieced cloth and silk-screened with Celtic knots. Two hand-made feather fascinators on each side. Three small copper sculptures fashioned from cut pieces of copper braised together. A sitting grotesque sculptured by a close friend. A cobalt-stemmed glass with a hand-carved and then cast pewter medallion. Two cast Green Man wall sconces carved by a retired history teacher whose booth is up the row from mine. A modern tapestry depicting a Renaissance world map. Scenic custom boots made from a pattern of my feet, placed on a shoe shelf.

While it would take too long to go through every room in the house, our home is a melting pot of creative and unique artworks that tell stories and bring joy to our daily lives. Each piece has its own history and significance, making our home not just a space, but a storybook of creativity and individual expression.
