Understanding the Connection Between Rishi Agastya and Ravana
In many interpretations of Hindu scriptures, Ravana and Rishi Agastya’s relationship is often misunderstood or misrepresented. Common belief suggests that they were closely related, but in fact, Ravana was Rishi Agastya’s uncle, and these connections can be detailed through the lineage traced back to Pulastya, one of the Prajapatis (mind-born sons of Brahma).
Lineage from Pulastya
Pulastya, one of the ten Prajapatis (mind-born sons of Brahma), was also one of the Saptarishis (seven great sages) from the first Manvantara. His lineage includes Ravana, and it is through his son Visravas that Ravana was born, making Agastya his uncle. This complex familial relationship is rooted in the epic history of ancient India, as documented in various Hindu scriptures.
Role of Agastya in Hindu Scriptures
Sage Agastya is known for his significant contributions to Hindu scriptures and is often remembered as a great ascetic. His relationship with Ravana extends beyond just being his uncle. He played a pivotal role in providing Astra (weapons) to Sita’s husband, Rama, which significantly contributed to Ravana’s defeat.
Agastya’s Intervention in Nilgiris and Ravana’s Exile
One notable story involving Agastya and Ravana is the tale of Agastya’s role in driving Ravana away from the Nilgiris (Blue Mountains). When the sage Agastya arrived in South India, he was categorized as a Northern sage. Ravana, who also considered himself Naiyayika (from the North), resented Agastya and decided to challenge him. However, Agastya performed penance and used this to his advantage to get Ravana exiled from the Nilgiri mountains, a significant region rich in mythical and historical significance.
Rescuing Ravana from Kartaveerya Arjuna
Another noteworthy event brings Ravana and Pulastya (the father of Agastya) into the story, illustrating their familial bonds. When Kartaveerya Arjuna captured Ravana and held him as a hostage in his kingdom, Pulastya stepped in to rescue Ravana, demonstrating the familial ties and the respect the sages had for each other. This event is recorded in the Uttara Kanda of Valmiki Ramayana, a significant segment of the ancient epic.
Competitive Story of Agastya and Ravana
There is a lesser-known story where Agastya Maharishi orchestrated a competition with Ravana. When Ravana was creating havoc in Bharat, challenging warriors to come and test their strength and courage, Agastya Maharishi devised a plan to curb his arrogance. He proposed a competition, stating that if Ravana won a Veena competition, Agastya would yield to him, but if Ravana lost, Ravana would promise not to trouble people. This competition showcases the humility that Agastya maintained despite Ravana’s grandeur as a warrior and master of various arts.
