Why I Chose Car Mechanic as a Career
Back in my early 20s, I was desperately trying to regain control of my life after making a significant mess of it. My career choices were limited, as I had already completed a pre-vocational course in plumbing, but no job came my way. A casual acquaintance suggested that becoming a mechanic might be a better fit for me considering my longstanding interest in automobiles. Intrigued, I decided to spend four weeks working part-time as a mechanic to see if it was a good match. To my delight, it turned out to be a perfect fit for me, and I discovered that I had a genuine passion for this profession. In this article, we delve into the reasons behind my decision, my journey in the field, and the challenges I faced.
My Journey to becoming a Mechanic
.My interest in mechanics can be traced back to my childhood. My grandpa and dad were mechanics, and one of my brothers still is, while the other was once a motorcycle mechanic. It was clear that automotive expertise was embedded in my blood, but as a teen, I had a taste of the trade when I applied for a job at a local garage. Despite them having no openings at the moment, they kept my application on file.
Fast forward to 1984, I received an unexpected call for an interview. My initial excitement was dampened after hearing the minimum wage for the position, but I was determined. Following the training program, which included classroom sessions and hands-on work with experienced technicians, I was eventually hired as a full-fledged mechanic.
The Pleasure and Frustration of Being a Mechanic
My decision to pursue car mechanics was driven by a passion that went beyond just performing a job. It started as a hobby and eventually transformed into a career. I found myself frustrated by the lack of proper repairs and the realization that there was so much more to learn about cars. My curiosity led me to deepen my knowledge and expertise, and I ultimately embraced the challenge of becoming a knowledgeable and experienced mechanic.
However, along with the satisfaction comes the regret. Despite the undeniable skills and reputation of mechanics, the pay scale is often far below what it should be. Mechanical work requires significant investment in tools, and the environment can be hazardous. In addition, many mechanics do not have access to retirement plans or affordable health insurance. Working on a job basis and earning only a set rate further complicates financial stability.
Personal Stories and Reflections
Looking back, my journey in the automotive field has been filled with both ups and downs. The events of the 1970s, marked by concerns about overpopulation, running out of oil, and a collapsing civilization, influenced my outlook towards practical survival skills. My dedication to mechanical competence, building houses, and growing vegetables was a reflection of my desire to be self-reliant in a potentially turbulent world. My experience with maintaining a car during those times, where electric automobiles were not yet commonplace, was a source of pride and a testament to my skills.
Despite the challenges and the occasional frustration, I remain committed to the mechanics field. The passion for automobiles is what drives me, and I continue to learn and evolve in my profession. My story is a testament to the personal fulfillment that can be found in a career dedicated to mechanics, despite the inherent challenges and disappointments.
