Wilderness Camping: Tents vs. Tarp - My Experience and Tips

My Wilderness Camping Experience: Tents vs. Tarps

When it comes to camping in the wilderness, I prefer a rip-stop nylon tarp over a traditional tent. Here's why, as well as some valuable insights and tips for successful camping adventures.

Tents: Pro and Con

Tents can be stuffy, confining, and generally not conducive to an enjoyable outdoor experience. They have poor air circulation, making it hard to breathe freely. Condensation from your breath often builds up inside, and in colder weather, it can freeze. Moreover, there's no view, no starry nights, and no fresh air from the outdoors—you're left with just the smells of your fellow campers.

Worse, in most backcountry tents, you can't stand up; you're often forced to bend at the knees, which is not the most comfortable way to spend your nights. Additionally, the bulk and weight of these tents can be a significant drawback. They take up valuable space in your backpack and just add to your burden.

Tarps: Advantages Over Tents

A rip-stop nylon tarp, on the other hand, is far more comfortable and practical. It's cheaper, lighter, and takes up less room in your backpack. You can easily add a lightweight mosquito tent and a plastic ground cover for added protection, and you're all set. The only downside to a tarp is that it won't offer the same level of protection in very high winds, venomous snake country, or high water conditions, but these are rare and exceptional scenarios.

A Spooky Encounter

My experience camping in the wilderness with a tent was less than ideal. Granted, I didn't really like the tent anyway. But one night, things took an unexpected turn. I was alone, far from the rest of my camping buddies, when I heard some strange noise outside my tent. Thinking it was one of my friends, I just wanted to get some sleep, so I didn't speak. They simply walked by.

The next morning, I peeked out and was startled to find bear tracks just a foot away from the tent opening. Luckily, I didn't have any food nearby, so the bear had no interest in me. Nonetheless, this experience made me realize the importance of choosing the right camping gear and location wisely.
