Budget-Friendly Accommodations in Yosemite National Park During Winter
If you are planning a winter visit to Yosemite National Park on a budget, there are several options that can provide you with both comfort and affordability. Whether you prefer to stay within the park or just outside its boundaries, there are numerous choices to suit your needs and preferences.
Campsites and Tent Cabins
The Park keeps a minimum of two campgrounds open in the Valley and a few others like Wawona throughout the winter season. Staying in these campgrounds can be economical, especially when you have winter-grade sleeping bags and tents. A small fee is charged, and it is advisable to check the Park’s website (NPS) for the latest details and availability.
Yosemite View Lodge is an excellent option if you are looking for a budget-friendly lodge within the park. This lodge offers reasonably priced accommodations and is located conveniently in the Valley. I personally stayed here on a last-minute basis and found the experience to be satisfactory and within budget.
The tent cabins offer an interesting alternative. In the winter, the park offers a deal where the accommodation cost fluctuates based on the nightly low temperatures, up to a maximum of $39. If the temperature drops below 0°F, the park will even compensate you to stay in these tent cabins. This makes it an attractive option for particularly cold nights.
Curry Village Cabins
Curry Village is another exceptional choice during the winter season, primarily due to the extremely cold temperatures. I stayed in a heated and unheated tent-cabin with a raised wood frame and canvas ceiling in January 2009. While extremely cold, the experience was not unbearable with the right preparation. The heated cabins are also available but may not necessarily be much warmer.

Camping Alternatives
If you prefer to stay warm, camping might still be an economical choice if the temperatures are in the low 30s Fahrenheit. A very good sleeping bag is essential to ensure a comfortable night. If the temperature drops to near zero, tent cabins might be less appealing, and camping could be more suitable, but make sure you are prepared for the conditions with suitable gear.
Regardless of your chosen accommodation, don't forget to pack appropriately for winter in Yosemite. Layers, warm clothing, and winter-grade sleeping equipment are crucial for a comfortable stay.
Final Thoughts
