E-ZPass Usage in Multiple States
Yes, if you live in Boston or any other location in the United States and have an E-ZPass, you can use it in other states. E-ZPass is a widely recognized electronic toll collection system used in multiple states throughout the northeastern United States.
Understanding E-ZPass
E-ZPass is designed to simplify the tolling process for drivers across numerous states, including Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and others. As long as the state you are traveling to participates in the E-ZPass system, you can use your E-ZPass transponder to pay tolls without the need to stop at toll booths.
About the E-ZPass System
My own experience with E-ZPass has extended across several states. I live in a more rural area of New England and have used my E-ZPass in several neighboring states. For instance, I use it in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland. Notably, I've also utilized it on the Newport Pell Bridge, which added Rhode Island to the list of states where this system works.
Interoperability and State Differences
It's important to recognize that E-ZPass is a brand and not a universal system. State highway departments can either sign up with E-ZPass or adopt a different and incompatible system. For example, Florida has its own electronic tolling called SunPass, which will not work with an E-ZPass transponder.
Brand Name vs. E-ZPass System
Keep in mind that just because a state allows E-ZPass does not necessarily mean your E-ZPass from one state will work in another. Make sure to check if the state you're traveling to has clearly marked EZ-Pass logos at tolling stations. If there is no signage, you cannot use your E-ZPass.
Additional States That Support E-ZPass
Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, and West Virginia also support the use of E-ZPass. It's a convenient way to save time by not stopping at toll booths, but it's crucial to verify the specific requirements of each state.
Discounts and Savings
While E-ZPass from one state is interoperable with E-ZPass in other states, some states offer discounts for their E-ZPass users. For example, Maryland E-ZPass users get discounts for specific toll roads, such as the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel I-895, Fort McHenry Tunnel I-95, and Francis Scott Key Bridge I-695. With Massechusetts E-ZPass, you will pay the full price, while Maryland E-ZPass users can benefit from a reduced rate.
Specific Discounts
These discounts apply if you are a user of the local E-ZPass system. For instance, with 50 trips in 45 days, a Maryland E-ZPass user would pay $1.40 per trip on these specific toll roads, while a Massachusetts E-ZPass user would pay $4 per trip. Similar discounts may be available in other states, such as West Virginia.
