Finding Solace in a Midwestern Summer: My Lakeside Respite

How has your summer refuge fared?

Amidst the scorching temperatures and persistent drought conditions, finding a summer refuge has been challenging, yet for me, there is still a haven of coolness. We've been fortunate to live on a large recreational lake in the Midwest, far from the intense heat and forest fires experienced further west. Despite the hot days, we've had plenty of rainfall, thanks to our location. The air conditioning has kept our home cool and pleasant throughout the summer, allowing us to enjoy our stay without any discomfort.

Challenges and Perseverance

While the current situation has been difficult, record-breaking hot spells and a statewide drought have taken their toll. Record low rainfall and the smoky skies have made life less comfortable. The term 'blood moon' might sound intriguing but here, it serves as a grim reminder due to the constant presence of smoke in the upper atmosphere.

I've taken a vow not to let a 'virus' or any other factor ruin what can still be a vibrant and enjoyable summer. With temperatures soaring and the wildlife struggling, this year has been more challenging, but I remain determined to find my part in the summer's beauty.

The Ground is Dry

The landscape is dry, almost desperate for water. The only thing preventing widespread fires is a creek that dwindles to a mere trickle during the dry season. This creek is crucial for the wildlife's survival, acting as a lifeline. Without this water source, the region would look eerily similar to the eastern parts of Oregon, desolate and dying.

The Perfect Summer Refuge

For me, the perfect summer refuge is a place where air conditioning isn't necessary. For most of the first 59 years, my island refuge on Rainy Lake, up on the Canadian border, has provided a perfect sleeping environment with screened rooms where cool night air circulates freely. The temperatures at night can barely make it into the high 60s, even though the daytime temperatures soar into the 90s.

Particularly notable is that the usually cool waters of the boreal lake have reached temperatures as high as 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Northwestern Ontario is experiencing persistent drought conditions, making our skies as clear as those in Beijing. The absence of clouds means perpetual sunny days, and the smell of burning forests often dominates the air when the wind shifts.

Enduring the Heat

I am hopeful that August will bring a reprieve from the blazing sun, but the weather system seems to have been present since mid-June, remaining stubborn and unyielding. This week, a large birch tree next to my house lost all its leaves, a sign of the heat's impact. Despite the challenges, I find joy in simple activities like early morning walks and habitually eating cold food during the hottest part of the day to stay cool.

While this summer has its hurdles, I remain optimistic and grateful for the many blessings that this midwestern lake offers, even in the face of adversity. The allure of nature's respite, even in the most challenging times, is a reminder that beauty and solace can still be found.
